Display Connector Slightly Damaged

Hi,

I have a 2009 unibody macbook pro and i bought it with a slightly damaged display connector. I am just wondering is there any way to fix that connector with some tweezers or small tools without soldering?

Here is a photo for reference

Unfortunately you will need a soldering iron or a hot air station to fix it. If you poke the pins with tweezers you risk ripping off the pads and shorting pins together.

These connectors are cheap to buy and not too difficult to replace with basic soldering rools.

Just a little damage? Nope BIG DAMAGE!!

You'll need as @honakrisi stated a new connector no ifs about it!

Thanks mate :)

If you don’t have the needed tools or skills its best to find someone with micro soldering skills and tools.

Replacing the LVDS connector is a bit tricky as you need to remove the connector without lifting the fragile copper traces on the PCB. I would use a broad blade tip like this one as you need to heat all of the contacts soldered to the PCB at once. Using a hot air station it a bit tricky without knocking off some of the other components but with the experience its the better way.

Here’s a bit on what Louis Rossmann uses for tools and how the LVDS connector is removed:

DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU CAN PRACTISE ON SOMETHING ELSE OR HAVE EXPERIENCE. People like @danj or @honakrisi probably have more experience and you will be totally upset if you damage this beyond repair.

This is not for the faint of heart and requires a lot of practise!! As a former electrical engineering student, even soldering components takes some practise, desoldering requires a lot more experience as too much heat can get the pads to seperate from the board itself. A hot air gun is much more forgiving but even then can be damage causing. Watch Louis Rossman or Jessa Jones videos and understand that they have YEARS of practise and make it look easy.

@dunc

I’ve actually been soldering since I was a kid.

Thanks for the warning tho

@rs1020 Great... then that warning is for others who find this answer. :-)

Be well and hope you get to fix it perfectly.

@dunc Thanks mate!

Have a great day
