Display starts bright and then becomes dark. Inverter?

Hello,

when I turn on my MacBook the internal Display is working normally. After some minutes the display gets darker and darker until you nearly can't see anything anymore. Using the Macbook's keys to make it darker and then brighter again will help for some seconds. When I turn off the display for some seconds by using the active corners it gets completly bright again and within seconds it starts to get dark again.

So what can I do? The late 2008 Unibody Macbook has allready LED backlight. Is there an inverter at all? What can I check? And how can I find out which typ of an inverterboard is used so I can order a new one?

Thanks for any help or suggestions!

The unibody MacBooks do not have an LCD driver board like the older Macbook Pros did. This is a tough one to make a call on without taking the laptop apart and looking for any signs of damage. Are you sure you did not spill something on the laptop?

Thank you Max for a first answer!

I know this behaviour is very strange - but it is as it is! I am very sure I didnt spill something on the laptop. Most of the time the Macbook is closed and used with an external monitor.

So what I checked is the brightness sensor - it is working! I reinstalled Mac OS X. I checked the battery and started without the battery. I set the value for the background light by hand using the terminal.

So what could I check inside the Macbook?
