Why is a quarter of my screen going bad, can it be fixed?

All of a sudden after some flickering a quarter of my screen on the left side has gone bad. The colours are not what they are supposed to be like on the rest of the screen. There’s a split by a vertical line. Is this a software issue or a hardware issue? Can it be fixed without replacing the entire screen?

If you have the same bright/dark division it is a hardware issue. If the BIOS looks fine then you are looking at a software issue.

If your MacBook is still under the original warranty, you should contact the Customer Support directly to have them put you in touch with the Technical Support to see what they can do about troubleshooting remotely.

Thank you! I think it’s a software issue then because the start up screen with the apple logo doesn’t have the weird division. I also did the diagnostics (startup with D) and the division wasn’t there either and the diagnostics came back with no issues.

@lauyen Good to hear that, you may do something to further troubleshoot which software has caused the issue.

@v3nuo ,thanks how do I do that? I just upgraded to Big Sur and the issue is still there :( Maybe I have to downgrade.

You may try booting into safe mode to see if that fixes the issue.

@v3nuo Yes I tried that already, the screen was like that too in safe mode.
