Does it really matter what battery goes into an iPod Touch?

I have an Ipod Touch 3rd Gen 64GB that needs a new battery. When I opened it and looked at the APN, it said 616-0471. Is that the original battery for the Ipod Touch 3rd Gen 64GB, or can I just use any kind?

Here is what I got

Apple part number: APN: 616-0471 VPN: P11G91-01-S01T, 3.7V, 2.92Whr

Additional Part numbers:

616-0399, 616-0400, 616-0401,

616-0404, 616-0459, 616-0461,

616-0472, 616-0472, 616-0473

All known variants of the 2nd and 3rd gen iPod Touch Battery are functionally identical and fully compatible. Just remember that the iPod's and iPhone's are really finicky when it comes to batteries.

Do you think that any battery lasts longer than the other? Should I buy the battery off of ebay sellers or not?

So if I buy the battery here: http://www.amazon.com/iPod-Touch-2nd-gen...

Do you think I could put it in a 3rd gen. ipod touch since the only difference between models is the operating system? I think it would work but I wanted someone elses input.

Yes, it should not give you any problems. If you check on my original answer, all the numbers are valid variants and interchangeable. Good Luck
