Why is my second hdd not working?

i have linux and widows both on my notebook in dual boot.

when i boot linux it works fine with the hdd mounted. but when i boot windows it is stuck on the loading forever. when i launch windows without the hdd it works. i managed to get the hdd work but windows was much slower. when i try to format the hdd on linux i get input/output error. but when i connect the hdd trough usb everything works. is it a hardware problem? how can i repair this ?

edit: windows 10 pro and linux mint 20

Many variables here, firstly does your linux distro boot without the second hdd? When you are able to boot windows, do you do it from grub?

Hi @coconus

When the laptop is first started and the Lenovo logo is on the screen press F1 to enter the BIOS setup menus. All the info should be there.

Hi @coconus ,

With the 2nd HDD connected, check that the 2nd HDD is not listed in the BIOS > Boot, boot priority list anywhere as it is a storage drive and shouldn’t be listed there.

If it is remove it from the list and then check if Windows works OK.

it looks like it works. the windows runs fine now but i still get I/O error on linux(input output error). i will try to run the HDD on USB for some time to see if it wil work.

The OS using the HDD will absolutely be slower because USB is currently slower than SATA, M.2, NVMe, or any other current hard drive technology. Also, HDD drives are slower than SSD drives.

SSD drive may speed up your system and eliminate the I/O errors.
