well i would imagine you can put as much as i have in my macbook pro core 2 duo 15" 3,1 which is 6gb (1x2+1x4), I tried for 8 and needless to say it just didn't like it at all… however the 6gb screams!! and have had no ill effects even though apple claims it maxes at 4gb… They always underscore the power of their own machines...

I have added 12 Gb to mine without any problems. When your machine boots up, enter command-R to boot into recovery mode. Once your machine is in recovery mode, remove the ram bezel, take out the old ram and replace it with your newer ram. Open the terminal and type "diskutil -v -r ram devswap" without the quotes. Enter your password and finally reboot your machine.

@sherrytech - Sherry - I'm sure you've added gobs of RAM in your system but not all iMac's are alike! Think of it this way how many people fit into a bus (let say 50) so can you fit that many in your car?? I'd love to see that ;-}

So, the model you have could support that much RAM (it could even support more) but your system is not this system is it?

This system due to its age is limited to only 2 GB of RAM if it's a Core Duo and 4 GB if its the newer Core 2 Duo model. Here's one source to find out what the limits are: iMac 17" 1.83 GHz Core Duo and here the other: iMac 17" 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo.

We do want people to answer questions, but its important people do the needed research and post there sources so people have a reference. Did you see the two references I posted here?

Sometimes the source info is wrong and someone will pipe-up offering another source with a different answer. When that happens we debate it and if possible test the answer to be sure the correct answer is posted.

Hang in there! But do your homework before answering!

Also, if you remove the ram when the system is on it will freeze and shut down.

@gigabit87898 - Good Point! You never want to remove any part when the system is alive RAM, HD, SSD or Battery.
