i come across many smartphones out there. can anyone give me a basic description of how to test the unit fully to make sure everything works as it should? shortcuts, tips, basics? Thanks!

The simple answer, use it!
The longer answer:
Do all the buttons work?
Do ALL parts of a touch screen work?
Does it play video (no dead pixels, good color)?
Does it play Audio?
Does it download?
Can it upload (if possible for the phone)?
Can you play games?
Can you update and revert the firmware?
How's the battery life?
Phone calls go ok?
Computer connectivity ok?
Mechanical/physical flaws?
Can you change all the phone settings and they work?
The list could go on for a bit if you got detailed. Again, the best answer is to use it.
