Picture displays in 480p with safe mode, stuffs up in higher res

I have a PS4 that I am trying to fix. It was not displaying at first, but once I booted it into safe mode, the picture displayed. After restarting the console in 480p, I went into the settings to up the resolution, the display got worse the higher resolution I went, with red dots all over the screen(pictures below). The screen will slightly flicker on 720p and get worse at 1080i and 1080p.

My question is:

Has the HDMI port on the motherboard $@$* itself or has the HDMI chip on the motherboard done it in?

Thanks in advance!

Hi @rangsm8 ,

Did you verify that the problem is in the PS4 and not the HDMI cable or the TV (monitor etc) by trying different cables or a different TV etc?

by

@jayeff I tried 4 different cables, 3 monitors and a tv mate

@rangsm8

Bit drastic maybe but try reinitialising the PS4 and then check.

if it is still no good then most probably it is the HDMI chip.

Save all your data first though

@jayeff

When you say to reinitialise is, do you mean to reset the console?

If it is the HDMI chip, would it be a case of just reseating it?

Have you solved the problem?

I have exactly the same

Hi @rangsm8

I did mean a reset as I was trying to forestall replacing the HDMI chip in case it wasn't the problem.

Here's a video that shows what would be involved in doing this.

replacement chips are available online.

It seems like there is a problem in your HDMI cable. Replace the data cable connected between PS4 and TV to verify the HDMI cable status. There may be also issue with your TV resolution. Please reconfigure your TV resolution through any technician.

I tried 4 different cables, 3 monitors and a tv mate.

Nothing seems to be working.

The port wiggles a little bit when the hdmi is in

by

As you said 'The port wiggles a little when the hdmi is in' might be problem with port.

by

I didn't know if there is meant to be a fraction of play in the port.

If that's the caase, would the first thing be to check the solder joints around the port?

I had exactly the same issue, replaced the encoder as suggested here, turns out to be a bad filter ... Spent 40€ on a new encoder while the original one was working good ! So before replacing an encoder, always check if the filters are testing good :)
