Why does the scanner produce black printouts

My printer prints perfectly clear faxes, prints, but the copy and fax sending are completely black.

The glass is clean and there are no jammed pieces to be seen.

Any clues?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hi @aalleexx ,

The problem might be caused by a faulty scanner unit (aka Contact Image Sensor CIS) or the power to the scanner unit.

Copying and scanning are performed by the same scanner unit. The difference is that usually with copying it is printed straight away but with faxes and scanning, the “scanned” information from the document that is fed into the Document Feeder, can be stored in the printer and retrieved later.

Here’s the service manual for the printer. On p.3-9 (page 50 of 103 pdf numbering) you will find the location of the CIS.

Don’t know the printer but usually with most printers when copying or scanning you can “see” the scanner unit light turned on as the document is fed through the feeder. It is easier to see with printers that allow you to lay the document on the flat platen glass to copy and scan as you can see the light travel along the glass (under the cover) as it is scanning the document - like in a copying machine. When using the document feeder the scanner unit “light” stays in the one place and the paper moves in front of it.

Try using the Tech Mode > Machine test > scan aging as shown on p.4-14 and check if that gives any results.

If it is a faulty CIS then here’s the parts list for the printer. On p.6 part #8 is the CIS (part #0609-001360 ). If you search online using the part number only, you will get suppliers for the part. If the scanner is not turning on unfortunately I cannot find the schematic for the printer which would help in locating where the power to the scanner comes from on the mainboard, if there is no power at the scanner unit itself. If there is power at the scanner unit and it is not on, then most probably the unit itself is faulty.

Hopefully this is of some help.
