does not recognize new hard drive

I just replaced my old hard drive with a new one in my Macbook Pro 15" A1286. It is a Seagate Momentus 7200 rpm 750 GB. I was going to reinstall the OS in this hard drive but it doesn't recognize it. What should I do?

I have to ask if you have started the MacBook from the Mac OS X DVD. You must format the drive first. After you choose language select 'Disk Utility' from the Utilities menu. Do you see the hard drive there on the left panel? You can choose the drive and choose 'Erase' from the top menu.

+ Also give it one partition to insure GUID format.

You are right mayer. If you use the "Partition" tab in Disk Utility and choose 1 partition the the correct format (in this case GUID) will be chosen automatically since you booted from an Intel Mac. I guess Johnell wants to use the whole drive as one.
