You can upgrade your HP EliteBook 8460p Laptop to up to a maximum memory capacity of 16GB Memory.

DDR3L is a dual voltage capable memory DIMM, which supports operation at both 1.5V and 1.35V. DDR3L is also pin-compatible with DDR3!

DDR3 is a single voltage capable memory DIMM, which supports 1.5V operation only.

Basically you can use either.

Hi,

Here's the ifixit HP Elitebook 8460p memory replacement guide which may help.

Here are the specifications for the laptop which show that DDR3 PC3-10600 SDRAM (1333 MHz) is used but as @v3nuo stated DDR3L will also work as well as it it dual voltage.

It also shows that the laptop supports a maximum of 16GB (2 x 8GB)

Hi @ cyber ops

It may depend on what exact CPU model you have. It may only go to 1333MHz so the 1600MHz ram will work at that speed i.e. 1333MHz

It really doesn't matter as you won't be able to notice the difference anyway.

You would be better off replacing the HDD with a SSD (if there isn't one there already) to really see an improvement in performance

RAM can only do so much.

The bottleneck in laptops are the chipset, CPU and the motherboard design and there is a limit to what you can do and no more to get performance improvements.

Your laptop was designed 10+ years ago, which is a lifetime in computer terms. It is showing its age and it may become a matter of economics as to whether to spend money or not for very small improvements in performance

I put a Samsung ssd and 16gb ram. 170 bucks all in all . Runs like a dream but beware windows updates . Hardware drivers are non existent so your speakers may go or the touch pad.

Hi @wesley wild

If no Windows 10 drivers available old drivers will often work fine IF installed in Windows Compatibility Mode. I have done this successfully many times with old systems and Windows 10.

I think You forgot that 8460p is i5 2nd generation not i7. I am using this laptop for more than 6 years. You can use ddr3L instead of ddr3 ram but there is no increase in performance. Even I used 1600 MHz instead of old 1333 MHz ram but when I googled I came to know that its processor is clocked at 1333 so, ram will still be on 1333. So don't waste money and just increase ram memory like 8gb or 16gb using two sticks. I love the performance of this machine at 8 gb ddr3 with a SSD.
