HP ProBook 450 G6: pink/green screen every 2 seconds

Hi guys!

After a couple of years my ProBook 450 g6 screen has this issue: every 2 seconds it turns from normal to pink/green colors, with horizontal lines on the screen and distorted images.

I’ve disassembled it and everything seems to be ok: I’ve touched the flat and both connectors with the computer turned on, but the problem is still there.

Anyone can help me to discover the issue?

Thanks in advance for the reply!

Hi @ds_1 ,

Things to try:

a. Try entering BIOS on startup and check if the problem is still there. Press F10 on startup when (if?) the HP logo appears. This is to determine if it is an OS software problem or a hardware problem.

b. If it doesn’t occur when in the BIOS menus then try starting the laptop in safe mode and check if it happens.

If it doesn’t happen when in safe mode then there is a driver problem. Check that the display adapter drivers in Device Manager are up to date and that it is installed correctly

c. Connect an external monitor to the laptop and check if the problem occurs on it or not. Press F1 to toggle between the displays i.e. laptop only, both displays on together, extended display or external display only

If the problem is still there on the laptop screen only, then most likely it is a screen hardware problem, display cable or LCD panel.

If the problem occurs on the external monitor also it is a GPU or motherboard problem

If you determine that the problem is with the LCD panel, here’s the maintenance and service guide for the laptop. Go to p.24 (non touch screen Item #4) or p.25 (touch screen model Item #1) to find the part numbers for the LCD panel. Search online by typing the appropriate to your model part number only, in the search box of your browser to find suppliers that suit you. Usually the part number can be found on the back of the LCD panel somewhere, if you wish to verify that you’re ordering the correct part.

The manual also details the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove/replace the panel.

Hi @jayeff ,

thanks for the reply!

The issue occurs in the BIOS menu, too. So it’s an hardware issue.

It disappeares via HDMI, so I believe it’s the flat cable or the LCD. I’ve disassembled the entire notebook and moving the flat around the two connectors area doesn’t fix the issue.

I’ve bought a new flat cable, using the part number in the service guide you posted (thanks a lot!), I’ll start to replace it. I have a non-touch model, so the flat cable is part number L45144-001 (on the original flat cable there’s this id number, that I used to find the exact flat cable replacement: DD0X8KLC300),

Do you know where can I find the replacement tape to hold the LCD? I’ve removed the old one to disassemble it and I can’t find any dealer in Italy that has it. BTW, I don’t even know the exact name of it! :D

Hi @ds_1

Did you check the cable for any damage, where it passes through the hinge area?

Check on p.29 -Plastics Kit (includes fingerprint sensor insert, IR and HD camera sponges, and "display enclosure adhesive" L45095-00

Not sure if this it it or not or whether you can get the adhesive (assume tape) as a separate item. You may have to ask ;-)

Alternatively try some suitably sized double sided adhesive tape (click for 4 or 8mm example perhaps). It's used in phones and tablets to hold down the screen so it should be strong enough I think
