Spilled water over my laptop / can it be repaired

I was running late for work and accidently spilled a glass of water on to my HP OMEN 15-dc0030nr. Flustered, I didn’t know what to do at the moment so i just filliped it over and made the mistake of leaving it plugged in and left for work. when i came back It was still working but latter just shut down and would not start again.

I left it for a week to dry out (now realising that was a mistake) and still got no response. A few things to note, when the battery is pluged in aswell as the charger the battery light slowly blinks orange and pressing the power button doesn’t turn it on. when I unpluged the battery and then connected the charger, it still wouldnt turn on, but now the orange blinking turned white and was blinking faster. I guess there still is some life in it.

I know it will be costly, and i dont even know if it can be repaired. I contacted HP and told them about this and they directly pointed me in the the direction of buying a new laptop…

if anyone knows what the problem is and whether it can be repaired, this will be some great help.

Hi @sherdil ,

You can only inspect it and check what the damage is and go from there.

Do not try to charge it or to turn it on any more and disconnect or remove the battery from the laptop to minimize any further damage from occurring.

Here’s the maintenance and service guide for the laptop, taken from this webpage

The will help you to open the laptop and to disconnect the battery from the motherboard and also to remove/replace parts so that they can be cleaned of any corrosion caused by the water etc

Here’s a link that in general describes what to do when electronic devices have come into contact with liquids Electronics Water Damage

I suggest that if there is corrosion that you use Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available from electronics parts stores) and a soft brush to gently clean away the corrosion.

You can only try cleaning it thoroughly and after making sure that it is completely dry and then has been reassembled correctly try turning it on and check what happens.

Most likely your motherboard has corrosion you may need to replace it. If you have a place that does board repair they might be able to fix it.

It's extremely possible the mainboard is unfortunately in need of replacement. It's also possible that the drives are also shot. Have you opened the laptop to checkout the water damage. To see how exstencive it actually is. Although I hate to say it but most likely it's done. All that's left would be to try to extract the information on it, and transfer it to another system. Hopefully that's possible, best of luck.
