Why wont my battery work! Stupid black x!

My mid 2009 macbook battery wont work! there is a little black x on the battery icon and it does not recognize the battery! I know the battery is charged because the little lights on the battery light up then the test button is pushed! I bought a new battery but the new one does not work either! i need some help!
