White screen on start

Ive installed a new harddrive and optical drive I bought from ifixit. Install was easy due to the detailed guides.

Now my problem:

Ive inserted my osx disc, restarted and held down option. The screen appears white or a slight grey. The mouse cursor appears. But boot options do not.

If I reboot and do not hold any keys down, I get a blinking folder with a question mark.

What should I do here?

Thanks!

Usually when repairing or upgrading a computer it's a good idea to just do one thing at a time and make sure it works before proceeding to the next because if there is a problem, you don't know where to look. I don't know why you are replacing the drives or what drives you got. Usually you would replace the hard drive first, format the drive and install a system. Then go for the optical drive.

Optical drive was dead, then the hardrive went a few months later. So to add a new hard drive that comes unformatted Id need a working optical no? :)

hey @mayer any ideas or tips?

I'd go with an external DVD drive from LaCie like this one: http://www.lacie.com/us/products/range.h...

Ok, So I got my hands on an external optical drive. I inserted the recovery disk, held down option key and rebooted.

While holding down the option key I get the white screen again and mouse cursor appears and thats it.

On a side note, the 4 lights that appear on the board are all lit up.

What next steps should I take?
