random shut off have to reboot

Received an Iphone 3G from a friend. It shuts off randomly (no specific occurance to correspond) has to be put back on the computer, rebooted and charged before it will work (phone driver has to reinstall everytime). It will work anywhere from 5 mins to ? days before doing this again. Purchased a new charging cord for it thinking this might be the problem. I was told this phone was originally jail broke. It is synced with Itunes now. Have no idea what the issue could be. Can someone help me with what I need to check or replace (besides the whole phone) next. I would like to keep it for awhile if possible. Thanks for all your help.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Its pretty easy. Update in itunes and re-jailbreak and unlock. If that doesnt fix it, just buy a replacement battery from the fine folks at ifixit or ebay because they seem to quite a bit cheaper there

It has been updated with itunes, don't know how to jailbreak, had a new battery put in it a couple of months ago, but will have a new one put in again. I will try this, thank you for the help and I will let you know if this is a success.
