How can I boot to an volume in order to run defrag software on my hard drive. In order for the software to work I have to boot from a different volume that's being worked on. How can I accomplish this if I dont Have an external drive yet. If there is any way to accomplish this without an external drive can someone please walk me through the necessary steps.

Boot from the Drive Genius Disk by holding the "C" key down and run it.

That would be sweet, but i downloaded from the internet, no CD.
Burn a system folder and the diagnostic software onto a DVD and do it.
Cant seem to burn it, the folder keeps coming up empty. Lost 3 dvd's already. lol
Can you burn anything?
Yes I can but it turns out that im new to macs and im in the exploration stage.

normally, to boot from another volume, you'd plug in an external drive with OS X installed, then in System Preferences->Startup Disk you'd select your external drive, then reboot
But if you don't have an external drive to boot from, you could boot your MBP into target disk mode (reboot while holding down the "T" key)
once you've done that, you'll see the FireWire icon moving around on your screen. At that point, you can plug a FireWire connector into your MBP and connect the other end to another Mac. Your MBP's internal hard drive will then mount on the desktop of the 2nd Mac as if it were just an external FireWire drive
I've not used any defrag software on the Mac, but I assume that from there you could run the app on the 2nd Mac with your MBP's FireWire-mounted drive as the defrag target.
when you're done, unmount your MBP's drive (on the 2nd Mac, select your MBP drive, then Command-E), then unplug the FW cable. Then, reboot your MBP to get it out of target disk mode.

Great answer bac, but i dont have another mac at home.
of course it would cost you money to get another drive, but in the long run it would be well worth your while to get a 2nd drive to use as backup, IMO. can you beg/borrow and external drive in the meantime?
No bac, I'm affraid that I'm gonna have to wait till I get my drive, or create a bootable DVD .

lol, girlfriends are lethal with macs. Drive genius 2. All I have are my disks that came with the comp. Can i boot to these and still run this software? If so, how?
