Powers off randomly, won't turn back on easily.

As title suggest, powers off randomly. Seems to stay alive if I actively use it (type or move mouse) but if I stop or watch a video it'll crash within a few minutes.

When it crashes it sometimes turns back on sometimes just won't and I have to keep pushing the power button, wait a few hours or charge it in order to get it to eventually turn back on.

It seems it's not fully powering off either as motherboard area remains warm and battery is significantly down when I do manage to get it to reboot.

Steps tries so far:

  • Fresh install
  • Pram and SMC reset
  • SMC hard reset, disconnect battery and hold power button

Not sure what else I can do. I thought maybe it was a battery issue so tried to run battery down and charge back up after SMC reset, but it crashes too much to get it to 0%. Also surely the motherboard would not remain warm and still receive power if SMC was shutting down due to battery issues.

Anyone recognise what may be going on here?

Options

The crash report is showing something going on within the memory stack. I would make a backup of your system using TimeMachine as you’ll need to wipe your drive and then re-install a fresh copy of your OS and then going back to the Apps store downloading your apps as needed. If you are also running apps from other sources make sure you’ve get them from the creator (i.e. Microsoft). You’ll also want to install a good antivirus, malware and spyware.

Before you restore anything from your backup you’ll want a deep scan of the backup and then restore just what you need.

Do make sure you not overload your drive! Leave at least 1/4 of the drive empty so you OS and Apps have the needed elbow room! More if you can!

Then you likely have a failing memory chip. This will require your logic board either repaired or replaced.

Are you sure this is a memory error? The reason I ask is that shutdowns become progress worse until the laptop won't even boot up, but if I do another fresh install from internet recovery, is like a reset, I can use the laptop for a full day before the first kernel error. Implying maybe the SSD is at fault...
