Lines on left part of screen

My Macbook Pro (15", unibody, mid 2009) has a problem with the left 2.5" or so of the screen:

It's intermittent, and the pattern is different every time, but always involves vertical lines. I can usually make it go away by opening and closing the screen a bit, but it's been happening more and more often.

Is this likely to be the LVDS cable?

Hi Henry, need to ask a few questions if I can,

1, has your machine been dropped.

2, has your machine had something dropped onto it.

3, has it had anything (liquid) spilt onto it.

you have said the pattern is only on a small portion of the screen, can you see this in osx when booted, is the patern there as the machine boots, prior to getting into osx.

As you change the angle of display does the pattern change.

Hi Steve,

1. It was dropped about 2 years ago, resulting in a small dent near the power and ethernet jacks. There were no symptoms then or during the intervening two years, but this might be in the problem location?

2. It hasn't had anything dropped onto it. I do carry it around a lot in a backpack and don't take any special precautions to protect it.

3. One smallish water spill about 6 months ago. I opened the case, washed the PCB in isopropanol, reset the SMC and all was fine.

Sounds like I am not too kind to it, eh ;)

I haven't seen the pattern during the boot process, but I very rarely reboot the machine so that's not too surprising. I'll try a reboot next time it shows up; my hunch is that the pattern will remain.

The pattern does change (in steps, not continuously) and disappears/reappears as the angle of the display is changed. I can usually make it go away by moving the angle back and forth a few times and stopping in a good spot. It also sometimes changes, disappears and reappears by itself with the angle fixed, especially if the machine has just been wakened after sleeping for a while - I'm guessing some kind of thermal effect here.

Also, the pattern is always exactly the same width.
