Why has my iPod 1st gen stopped charging via mains or usb?

My ipod touch 1st gen has just stopped charging via the mains charger or the USB link lead, is this likely to be the battery or another fault?

Rob Scott, if this is still the original battery, I would think that it is time to change it. It must be at the end of its lifespan. Of course, make sure that your cable is working right and that your dock connector is not corroded, does not have bent pins and that there is no debris in it. Most likely, the battery ;-) good luck

OK thanks docking pins are ok so time to change battery then.
