Box fan makes zingzing sound

My Robeson box fan stopped working, meaning I could hear the motor hum but the blades did not rotate. I removed the blade assembly, cleaned out the dust and oiled the motor. I tested the fan without attaching the blades. The motor seemed to work. After I put the blades back on again, I hear a zing-zing sound. How can I fix this?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hi @anupm12

If you hear the motor hum and it does not spin well, I suggest you to check on the fan capacitor first. It should not crack / bloat or leak.

Augustine, after the cleaning and oiling the motor (with blades removed) does spin properly with no strange noises. When the blades are installed, the motor still spins but I hear a constant zing-zing sound. The capacitor is not cracked, bloated nor leaking.

Hi @anupm12

With the blades on, when manually spinning them, looking from side on i.e. not from the back or the front, are they turning in a fixed plane or wobbling about due to a bent rotor shaft or faulty bearing that is only noticeable with the weight of the blades on it?

Jayeff, I don't detect any wobbling.

Does it make this noise when the fan is outside of the protective cage or only when installed inside it?

by

The motor and blades remain within the box (protective cage). I did remove the front and the back grills in order to make repairs.

@anupm12

So the blades aren't hitting the box at all (side/front) as they turn?

Are the blades all at the same angle away from the centre point?Just wondering if one were at a different angle (twist?) that it may cause the air to make a different sound

by

The blades are not hitting anything. One of the blades is twisted when compared to the other two. However the zingzing sound is metallic and not a swish of the air sound.
