MacBook Pro freezing with default display resolution!

Hi there!

I started facing the issue since Big Sur Beta 5. I first thought its just due to ram so used CleanMyMac to free it…but it started freezing even when there wasn’t anything running (even in the background) and also in the login window just after booting! The freeze would stay for 30 seconds and again unfreezing when I keep moving cursor. Also at first it was intermittent and only occur every 30-45 mins but gradually it went down to 3-4 mins. So now I started researching for this issue on the internet and tried everything from SMC/NVRAM reset to actually downgrading the entire system and formatting twice. Also contacted Apple Senior Representative, after troubleshooting over call, he suggested me to visit Genius Bar but appointments weren’t available due to lockdown.

Though I found out that the lag/freeze was due to true tone feature, once I turned it off my mac wasn’t freezing until 2 days but again started after that. While in the display section, I was trying every option possible and thats when I switched to ‘Scaled‘ from Default for display” and changed to ‘More Space‘ and to my surprise the freeze was literally gone and would feel like just a little lag (like 0.5 secs) sometimes. I still don’t know what’s the exact issue, but this setting resolved my issue for the time being.

(PS- Things I forgot to mention….1. When the machine was one default display settings, just after booting up the display would go from cool colour to warm and entire screen would freeze for a 30 secs and after logging in it will to cool colours. 2. Sometimes before the freeze, some white lines flash on display really quick and then it lags ( Only occurred 30/100 times. 3. I personally think I started facing this lag/freeze issue because of using a broken VAVA USB C hub with an external monitor….4. It also freezes sometimes in the MacOS recovery menu, and that’s when I knew that it has something to do with the actual hardware….but don’t know how it works perfectly fine with the More Space. Also I don’t think its an issue with the display itself as the lag also occurs when connected to external display)

If anyone of you faced this issue and have successfully resolved it, please help mine to recover. Till then I am good using on ‘More Space‘ :)

Answer this question I have this problem too

Web based CleanMyMac is a bit of a leach as it monitors what you are doing! Be careful some of these free cleaning apps are really malware in disguise!

Stick with Apple Apps Store apps! Get CleanMyMac X But be careful! It costs you $35 per year!

@advait17 - Time to visit the Apple Store you like have a messed up system which should be covered under warranty! If not its going to be expensive!

If it's not related to hardware, why wouldn't it recover after formatting twice?

by

@advait17 - You can format the drive over and over again and that won't fix this. You have a hardware level issue. The act of reformatting and installing a fresh OS is only masking the problem.
