Why monitor displays a lot of lines on screen?

After I startup my iMac there's a lot of lines on the screen. Now I am unable to see what's on the screen.

Could it bethe monitor faulty?

Please, connect your iMac on an external monitor and tell us if the video output is normal. It's the first step to troubleshoot a screen issue. The issue could be related to a bad GPU (graphic processor unit) located on the logic board or a screen internal component such as LVDS cable or the LCD panel. You can exclude the inverter and backlight failure if your screen still has lightning.
