Do I really need an antistatic strap/mat to work on an iPhone?

Ok, I have searched the questions here and read a few articles on it already. Most of the questions were dealing with Desktops and Laptops, not phones. I'm going to replace my home button on my Iphone and one of the "recommended" items listed was the Antistatic strap. Is this really needed to work on phones?

Thank you!

not until the first time you see a spark shooting from your fingers and zapping some of the NAND flash menory or other SMD parts....:-) At least follow these simple steps when you work on ANY electronics....http://www.computerhope.com/esd.htm it's called good practice.

You just need to make sure your grounded and not wearing any synthetics. For example I put my bare foot on my radiator pipe as I know it's grounded

aw ****. I did the same thing. I handled one of my phones internal working a ton without ESD protection. Am I screwed? I normally use an iPhone and since I just rebuilt my samsung the touchscreen doesn't work very well. I now realize my mistake, and wot do it again in the future,but I wonder if it's too late and I'm screwed, or if I could take it to samsung and have diagnostic tests done to see whether or not I really am screwed. Thanks a lot whoever's out there.

Basically you're playing a game of Russian Roulette here. It could kill you, wound you or not hit you at all.

Clearly dead is dead. But, wounded is hard to tell as it may take awhile before you bleed out. The same holds true with your phone ;-}

So the next time you should take the time to use ESD that way you won't even die!
