Can I use the SSD from a Mac Pro in my MacBook Pro?

I have the opportunity to pick up a 1TB SSD from a Mac Pro for fairly cheap, and was wondering if this will install in my 2014 15” MacBook Pro? I know the interface is the same 12+16 on both, but the SSD from the Mac Pro has a heat sink attached and I was curious if I’ll have space issues trying to install this drive into my MacBook Pro. The exact drive in question is a 1TB SSUBX MZ-KPV1T00/0A4 655-1860F. Thanks in advance.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

You’re in luck! Both of these systems use Apples Gen-3 SSD’s which use a PCIe 2.0 interface either the x2. The 1TB is a x4 drive so you get 2 more lanes of throughput!

Dan, Thanks! That was my understanding as well about the 1TB drive. My concern is actually a space issue, not a storage issue. The drive I'm looking at has a metal heat shield/heat sink attached to it (rather firmly from reports I've read), and I'm concerned I won't be able to reattach the bottom cover of the laptop, or that the heat shield will contact the laptop base, putting stress on the connector. Any experience in this area?

The heat sink! You'll need to take it off.

The more powerful Mac Pro can push the SSD hard which is why the heat sink is needed on it.

Any tips for getting the heat sink off? I read someone used a heat gun, but I'd be wary of putting that much heat on sensitive components.

Good question! I've never needed to take it off.

I would use solvent or Goo Gone or Goof Off
