2001 F150 HD edition odometer goes blank and truck starts running roug

Sometimes not all of the time but sometimes my trucks odometer display will go out as I'm driving down the road. When it does the truck then starts running rough. Then out of nowhere it will turn back on but there's no telling how long it will be until it does. Just the other day i drove down to the beach and when i was ready to leave it wouldn't start. Any ideas as to what might be causing this to happen?

Take it to one of the parts stores and have them pull computer codes and let me know what it says.
