Screen backlight is on, but it's not showing anything

Hi, so I got this macbook in February, and I’ve come back to it today and tried to turn it on and it starts up with the screen, keyboard etc all lighting up. It flashes the Apple logo for a split second and then nothing, the screen stays on but is black. A tiny hairline crack has appeared at the top of the screen no bigger than half a cm. Don’t know how this has happened macbook was in the same place I left it less than a hour before.

I can also log into my account, which I can tell because the Touch Bar changes when you log in and I can find my way on to different programs like Chrome by random chance.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Ouch! You need a new display assembly! Time to find your way back to the Apple Store or authorized dealer/service center to get your system fixed.

I hope you are sitting down … This likely won’t be covered under warranty, so expect to pay for the labor and the replacement display, a new display goes for over $1000 USD!

Honestly though how can such a tiny crack stop the computer from showing anything even when it's running and the backlight is on. It seems suspicious to say the least.

A crack breaks the electrical pathways the display needs to turn on the discreet pixels.

It doesn't take much to break it! a paperclip resting on the uppercase when you close the lid is all it takes.

To prove it connect an external monitor, I think you'll find it will have no problems with it.

@danj still strange as I've had a monitor before that had cracks in it with a thick line and an area of dead pixel and it worked for another year before I could be bothered to buy one. On my old Macbook from 2015 this thing feels so much more robust.

@TobyO Graphics - Ah! Comparing older versions of display to this one! Not the same ;-{

The older displays had a cover glass and then the LCD panel. Todays display don't have this cover glass! Just the exposed LCD panel which is a sandwich. Compare these two systems display configs

Do you see the differences?

Apple cut away even more space as the thiner the better in the TB models (Nope!)
