Compatibility for 2020 MacBook Air display assembly

Hi,

I was wondering if someone knowledgeable can confirm whether the 2020 MacBook Air’s display assembly is interchangeable with that of the 2019 model?

Initially I thought the 2020 screen was backwards compatible with 2018 and 2019, but I found per Everymac.com that apparently the 2019 model supports True Tone which the 2018 did not.

Much appreciated!

So i've tested this ;

One macbook was waterdamaged but the display seemed fine (a 2019 Intel). The second (2020 M1) was fine, but the display got walked on. So I decided to switch the displays around and see if it would work. To my surprise everything fits perfectly, connectors etc.

Now the issue I'm having is i don't know if it's worked or not. Laptop is in a bootloop and no image on display. It could have suffered some water damage too but the indicators were white. If it's a fit question, no doubt it fits.

Display Pinout, Firmware compatibility and/or my display being faulty are reasons why it may not work.

Here’s the breakdown on the display assemblies:

2018

  • Space Grey, Apple P/N 661-09733
  • Silver, Apple P/N 661-09734
  • Gold, Apple P/N 661-09735

2019 - TrueTone

  • Space Grey, Apple P/N 661-12586
  • Silver, Apple P/N 661-12587
  • Gold, Apple P/N 661-12588

2020 - TrueTone & Scissor Keys

  • Space Grey, Apple P/N 661-15389
  • Silver, Apple P/N 661-15390
  • Gold, Apple P/N 661-15391

Sadly, there is no compatibility between any of these!

You can’t use the 2019 display on the 2020 as the lid is setup differently for the longer stroke of the scissor keys!

Oh no, if true, that is worse than I feared... Looks like I’ll need to hunt for a 2020 assembly then. Thank you for looking this up, Dan. You just saved me from wasting a few hundred dollars and hours of frustration!

What flavor are you looking for Space Grey, Silver or Gold?

by

Gold would match my current machine. But I’m open. For my curiosity, are parts interchangeable between colors within the same year?

by

Yes, you can mix the color within the same series. While cool, you loose resale value so I don't recommend it.

Thank you Dan! Apple quoted me about $650 so that seems the best route barring a part found on eBay. You’ve been very informative and I appreciate your sharing your expertise!

@jules420 - To clarify this is just the raw LCD screen which if you have the skills on disassembling of the lid you can in fact replace the LCD screen!

So this is correct, just not very clear in their description! Keep in mind it's a bear of a job. As you are not altering the lid hardware or the camera you can do this!

Most folks stick with the assembly which is different between them! The metal lid is machined differently between the 2018/19 and 2020 as the Magic Keyboard (Scissor) is higher than the original Butterfly. Then Apple intro'ed TrueTone which altered the camera and its light sensor and its logic as well as the signals coming from the lid assembly to the system. So a 2018 display won't work on the 2019/20 systems.
