Vertical Lines, restart, and random white screen

I had an old 2011 iMac that had been sitting for awhile that would turn on and just go to a white screen.

I was able to reinstall the OS. and everything started working fine. I also upgraded the memory.

It worked fine for a bit and then randomly started having weird issues.

Now after it powered in within a minute the following started.

First the screen flashed, showed blue and black vertical lines, and then rebooted.

After reboot the screen was not right, weird lines, some stuff fuzzy, and not everything in correct alignment. I rebooted.

Then again with the gray and blue lines (got a picture of it this time and it is attached).

Now it is back to powering on, showing apple logo, and then going to white screen.

I tried resetting NVRAM and PRAM.

Any thoughts on what it could be or how to diagnose further?

Sadly the GPU board has failed ;-{

iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 (Mid 2011) Graphics Cards

We don’t have guide you can follow directly, but this one will get you mostly there Installing iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 Dual Drive Kit (HDD or SSD) Then finish removing the cables so you can remove the logic board fully on the back side is where the GPU board is located. Some people find baking it will revive it for a bit other wise its going to take a bit of hunting to find a good one.

I was afraid of that. I see you also linked iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 (Mid 2011) Graphics Cards are you saying it is both the GPU and the Graphics Card? Or it could be either?

@Christopher Meats - Sorry if I wasn't clear. The board holds the GPU chip, you'll need to replace the MXM board (card) which is what I linked as you have an option for either board. If you can't get the chip to wakeup by baking the board in your oven ;-}

It all depends! If you are a heavy graphics person it's likely won't last long.

The best way to explain this is... How a car going slow doesn't put out as much heat as a car running on the autobaun flat-out. If all you do is drive on local roads you won't burn out your car as fast as running down the autobahn! Thats the same here, the GPU's during this time point were not designed to support the heaver apps we now have. It's wasn't just Apple all of the makers struggled as the software was eclipsing what the hardware could run.

I forgot to add it to the original post. The one picture I was able to get of the lines I added. It happened one other time and looked a little different but I didnt get a picture of it. Now its doing the same thing of just booting to a white screen every-time and nothing else. this is what it was doing last time when reformatting the HD brought it back. So thinking maybe the HD is bad?
