lcd does not work, need trouble shooting tips or how to test

Ipad is recognize by Itunes, I have restored the Ipad and can load music on it. Problem is that the display does not come on so I don't have a way to control the Ipad. Have tried reset and hard reset, is their any way to trouble shoot the lcd with out having to replace parts?

My first instinct would be to use a dock connector to VGA cable, but I'm not sure if anything would come up before being able to unlock the screen. Maybe plug one in, and slide in the general area where the slide to unlock bar would be, and hope something happens?
