Have you done any work on the phone? It sounds like there is a short happening.

I have not done any work on the phone yet. I wondered if the battery needed to be replaced. I assume that is what is getting hot and causing the phone to malfunction. It does work better, although not totally when plugged into a power source. Still gets hot when plugged in though but at least more of the functions do work - ie text messaging, phone, twitter app. But the email still does not work when plugged into a power source.

The phone is fixed but it is interesting how it actually happened. Since the email was not working, I went into contacts and tried to send an email. That worked and then automatically took me back to email. At that point the phone cooled down and the email started working again. So strange but the phone seems to be fine now. I can only assume that there was something hung in the email that was causing it to work to hard or was in a loop or something that was over taxing the processor and causing it to heat up. I also did a complete sync. I was doing this in preparation of uploading all my info to a new phone.

So not really sure what I did or didn't do but the issue seems to be resolved.

Thanks for everyone's comments.

This usually happens when some sort of liquid gets inside the phone. Here is a really good guide for diagnosing the problem.

Good luck! Hope this helps!
