MacBook won't go to sleep when closed

Macbook A1181 13 2.0GHz

I got a black a1181 macbook pro that won't go to sleep when I close the lid. I know that the previous owner replaced the screen so I don't know if he messed something up there, however when I slowly slide a external hard drive ( a spare one not connected to the computer in any way) along the left side lower case next to the keys it goes to sleep, so I don't know if the reed switch is bad or if it isn't high enough? Or if it's the reed switch at all? any help or guidance is greatly appreciated

In the middle of the left side of the screen frame, there is supposed to be a magnet, which is held in by the frame. When the previous owner put the machine back together, he most likely forgot to put the magnet back in. If you replace the magnet, you should be fine. Your test confirms that the laptop side of the equation is working. To verify the magnet is missing, just pull back the screen bezel in the middle of the left side, and you will see an empty cavity that would house the magnet if it was present. You might want to take a look at the A1181 MacBook guide (it's just a MacBook, not a Pro) to see what it looks like before you start.

It's probably the magnet placement or lack of a magnet. See this answer: Won't sleep when lid is closed
