water damage, no backlight..where is backlight control?

fixing this for a friend but I can't find any information on what's on the motherboard and whether the LCD has the backlight control. There doesn't seem to be any signs of corrosion or liquid debris apart from between the digitiser and the LCD (all cleaned up now )..powers up and charges but the backlight is kaput. I'm not at all familiar with this phone so I'm wondering whether replacing the LCD will solve the problem or whether there is another ic that controls it. Thanks for your time..Jen

I can't find anything on the board that looks like it is a coil for backlight so have bitten the bullet and bought a new LCD. Also discovered that the phone here is called a Samsung "champ" but this isn't written anywhere on the phone.

I did find some service manual for the Champ. The flowchart is in Chines, but the rest might actually help out a bit. Just download it here Good Luck....:-)

thanks oldturkey, I'll see how it goes later on, but that should be pretty helpful. I've told her that a new phone is cheaper than the LCD but she loves her phone!

simple answer for anyone who is curious..the backlight is in the LCD. Now if I can just work out why it powers off instead of sleep the phone will be fixed!

I am not familiar with the phone. Obviously the first place to look would be in the operating system settings. Hopefully it it has been set to turn off instead of sleep. If not the problem is going to be in the power management chip or the circuitry associated with it. If you can find which chip is the power management chip do a google for the data sheet to it. The data sheet will give you the gist of the circuitry associated with it.

i thought as much...it has a small button battery soldered to the board which tested ok, all date and time settings are saved so I assumed it was doing it's job. The blackcurrant squash incident as she calls it only seems to have made a mess of the screens, nothing inside but I cleaned it anyway. Do you think a software update would be of any help (she says it's been cactus for a few months..)

so simple it hurt! the lock button on the side...but I've made a start on a guide so it's a win for my friend and a sigh of relief from me ;-) (still, it got another clean so it's all good) thanks all!

Updating the OS and/or firmware may very well help. That is an Android phone. rab777hp and Majesty are well versed with that op sys. You might edit your title to reflect the android operating system involvement. Perhaps others more versed with it will shed more light.

Problem solved...the phone has a lock button, when it "slept" I was pressing power to wake it. Not knowing the phone can make life a challenge. No need for software updates, but thanks AB.
