iMac camera image slightly obscured by aperture

Hi All,

I’ve bought this 2011 iMac 21.5” second ahnd and it’s in fantatsic condition apart from one issue. When using the built-in iSight camera for video calls (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc) the widescreen picture it displays is slightly obscured to the right hand side of the image. This seems to be because the camera and aperture on the display glass do not line up correctly. I’ve tried taking the display glass off and adjusting the camera position via the two T10 bolts but it always tightens down in the same position. When I apply pressure to camera housing from the side (with the bolts tightened) it can be moved either left or right but returns to the same postion when I stop applying pressure. When the outer display glass is fitted back on I continue to have the same issue. I tried tighetning just the left hand T10 bolt to see if it would anchor the camera to one side but it did not help.

Has anyone else experienced this issue or have any advice on how to rectify this?

You maybe fixing the wrong side of things! As we don’t have a clear history of the system I can only guess! What if the cover glass was replaced?

The cover glass black masking may have been not properly applied so the alignment of the hole in the paint is not correct. Using a tape measure check the FaceTime cameras aperture (edge of the lens from each side] Also check the cover glass aperture in the same way the measures from side to side should be the same. The glass opening will be slightly larger.

If they are correct then you only have one option to fix this replacing the FaceTime camera unit 21.5” iMac FaceTime HD Camera Apple P/N 922-9793

Thanks for the lateral thinking approach Dan! I've done as you suggested and the measurements match up as they should so will order a replacement camera unit. Much appreciated!
