In June 2017 Apple updated its 13" MacBook Air with a newer Broadwell Intel Core i5 processor, resulting in slightly increased performance and battery life.

MacBook Air suddenly dead, charger is also dead.

I bought this Mac two years ago, so it is not covered under warranty.

Few days ago, in the morning when I opened the laptop I found that it is completely dead, plugged the charger.

Charger was also dead. No indicator was glowing, neither on the jack of the charger nor on the laptop. Kept for sometime to see whether there was any heating. But I found that it was not even heating.

But the previous day of its death, it worked completely fine, both the charger and the laptop.

As our country is in lockdown, I could not even move to the nearest service centre, as all are closed.

So, is it a problem of both the I/O board and logic board? Or something simple? If the boards are gone then it will cost huge I think. And now I can not spend that much.

Could anyone please help me estimating the cost of repair of the laptop?

Specification of the Mac:

MacBook Air, 2017.

Problems in short:

  • Laptop is completely dead.
  • Charger is completely dead.

Thanks.

There is slight yellow coloration on the cable near the magsafe jack. I don't know whether it is identifiable in the attached picture or not.

Lets see if we can see something physically wrong here with the MagSafe charger and its connection to your system. Review this Apple T/N Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters as an example here’s one thats really bad!

This was caused by using a knockoff charger so do make sure you have a REAL Apple charger not a fake.

Update (05/30/2020)

At this point you'll either need to get a replacement MagSafe charger to test your system or you will need to pop off the bottom cover so you can then test the connection using a DVM to check the voltages of the MagSafe. Depending on what you find you either have a bad MagSafe charger (they do fail over time) or your logic board has a failure of a component.

Make sure you get a REAL Apple unit! There are just too many knockoffs now to trust anything at a non-Apple store or online (even if they state its OEM - which its not!)

Thanks for your reply. Please check. I have added the images. Apparently health of the ports are good. Only there is a slight yellow coloration at the charger cable's end.

The charger is original. It showed no problem since I bought the mac. Only sometimes the charger and magsafe got heated during charging. That's all.

Thank you again, Dan.

So the problem may come from the charger or the logic board.

I checked that if I need to buy a new magsafe original (from the link of apple store you gave) it will cost $79.

But if I need to change the logic board how much will it cost approximately?

Thanks for helping.

@mitranimesh - Around $500 ~ 600 USD Depending if its new or used.
