PS4 Recognises the disk but can't read it

Hello,

About a week ago, I changed the thermal paste and cleaned my PS4 CUH-1116A from dust, after testing that everything was OK, I completely forgot to fully test my BD drive, since the console didn’t have any visible problems with identifying any inserted game disk (it loads any previously installed game, probably can read the license off of the disc so that the game can start). However, a few days ago I tried another disk, that neither was used on that particular console nor have I ever played that game.

The console, though, couldn’t manage to prepare the installation. It just hung on the Preparing… screen (usually it stays for about a half a minute before it starts copying the whole game onto the hdd). Instead of waiting for a long time, I just decided to test DVDs and bunch of other BD disks that I had at home. The result wasn’t as good as I could’ve hoped. DVD disk didn’t give any errors but the whole system just froze. I had used the Rebuild Database option but nothing happened. On the other hand, one of the BD disk that I had used on the PS4 came up with an error saying that It couldn’t load the disk to watch a film.

Do you think that the data cable might be faulty or should I try to reconnect it again to see whether there might be another “probably“ more serious issue to the console?

Thanks in advance!

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

When you put a disc in, what do you hear? Does the disc spin?

Anyway, my guess is that the laser is faulty. But it can be a lot of things..

The disk spins just fine, ps4 can even identify different type of disks (whether it is PS4 game, DVD or Bluray film) but is unavailable to play them

Okay. So the power cable is seated correctly. The ribbon data cable should be fine too, otherwise it shouldn't read anything (could be damaged, if you are not sure, you should check it out). Also check the PCB of the drive if anything got loose from it. And if you open it up, you could replace the laser (just to test, you should be able to return it, if it won't work).

@koppie007 I think you were right about the Ribbon cable. It wasn't seated well. Though, I would also point out that it was poorly made since there were some small bits of plastic that covered some of the connections

@as2019 Yes, the connector (where the cable goes in to) is a little "fragile" and it's very easy to take the cable out without opening the security clip of the connector.

After all the troubles, the issue was with the flex cable. Changed it, drive works just fine. Thanks for you help!!!
