To format your iPod you will have to start it in Disk Mode. Follow the instructions from here.

The first thing you will need is to plug the USB cable that connects your iPod to a computer and a program like iTunes. Once you have that, plug it in and see if the computer recognizes it and if you can sync with iTunes. Here is a user manualhttp://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPod... I hope this will help, good luck.

When I connect my Classic to my PC two things happen now.

1.) ITunes comes up but the iPod does not show on its menu anywhere.

2.) My system gives me a message that the device needs to be formatted.

Unfortunately, if I try to do anything associated with that iPod the system freezes. I have tried to have it format the drive. The system just sits there with the donut just spinning, and I can not do ANYTHING else. Or, if I try to see if itunes may have the ipod hidden some how, it does not show up on any page or menu. Meanwhile, the ipod screen says "Connected" and its donut is going around and around.

This all started when I decided, after using my iPod for many many years without syncing it, because it had my entire music collection on it already, that it was time to add new audiobooks to it. Originally the ipod was formatted 32 bit. My system is now a 64 bit. Could this have messed up the drive itself?
