30 and 80 GB compatible?

I have 2 5th generation iPods. At first inspection it seemed like the battery in one was going/gone (the screen was blank and the HD clicked and whirled when on) and that the screen in the other was failing (very dim). I opened both up, swapped batteries and the screen comes up only with the circled red 'X'.

It appears now that both the batteries are fine. That the faulty screen may be due to water(?) damage and/or some very slight corrosion, and that the non working 80 GB's HD clip for the cable is broken in half lengthwise, so it won't stay in.

The numbers on the cables are almost the same:

821-0386-03

& 821-0387-03

both ©2005

The back of the 30 GB screen has LS025Q7UX01 68D113174

30 GB HD Model #HTC426030G5CE00

& the 80 GB PHC11052008

Model #? MK8022GAA

Ideally I'd like to come out with 1 iPod and 1 hard/external drive, but would be happy just creating 1 working thing out of these 2 faulty ones. Any ideas?

Good Question, and I am thouroughly confused. So, yes all the parts interchange,IF the HDD from the 80 GB is the same physical size. there are a 5mm and an 8mm drive out there. Check the see if the back for the 80 is thicker than the 30. I also use the sane HDD cable without any difficulties. If the back of the case has the same size, you can most certainly make one working one out of those parts. If the other drive is ok just get an USB to ZIF casing or adapter and it will show as an external drive. I do it all the time:-) Let me know if this helped or if I confused you more.
