Not quite sure which iPod you have. Some people call the iPod video "Classic" but it's only the 6th and 7th gen iPod that are the true Classic. Anyhow here are the guides

iPod 5th Generation (Video)

iPod 6th Generation and if you follow these you will have no trouble separating your iPod. The 6th generation is a PITA to open but not impossible. Good Luck
