have the Iphone 3Gs and tried to do the recovery in itunes was working fine then i did a update and now its stuck in recovery mode and my home button is not working.

I would start by trying programs like ireb or Tinyumbrella to kick it out of the recovery mode. Both programs are readily available. ireb here and Tinyumbrella here. I personally prefer iReb...Good Luck

Tinyumbrella is a bit hit and miss with some of my phones. You could also try taking motherboard off battery for an hour or so.. It may reset/break dfu.. Done that a few times with good results.
I've used both ireb and tinyunbrella a number of times with good results. I've never tried removing the battery from the motherboard, Polly. I'll keep that in mind.
