Please forget about the 2011 machines. Your's is a 2009. You will need to replace the top case, Apple part number 661-5244.

Apple MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.53 15" (SD) Specs

Identifiers: Mid-2009 15" - MC118LL/A - MacBookPro5,4 - A1286 - 2324*

Here's the part you need. The keyboard does not sell separately: MacBook Pro 15" Unibody (Mid 2009) Upper Case and Trackpad

Here's how to install it: MacBook Pro 15" Unibody 2.53 GHz Mid 2009 Upper Case Replacement

Nope! There are function keys on it that don't correspond properly with the ones you have. Sorry! :|

Surely, though, you still have an Apple warranty on your Mac. A 2011 model is very new.

Why don't you look up your serial number here on Apple and find out what type of support coverage you have. If the MacBook Pro started giving you trouble on its own, then Apple will gladly fix it for free if you're still under warranty. (Did you buy Apple Care?)

It's worth noting, however, that if you damaged your MBP by spilling some liquid on it, it's highly unlikely that replacing the keyboard will solve your problem. It could very easily be logic board damage. . . . Frightfully. :(

Thank you for the quick and helpful reply TommyJames :)

Unfortunately, it says my services have expired so I would have to pay :(

Would you happen to know of a place i can purchase a replacement keyboard? The model is a1286 and many show up on ebay but the year concerns me. Mine is 2011 and those say designed for 2008 or 2009 and not one is for 2011 :( but the model is the same...but i guess it wont work :'(

thanks so much though :p

actually, i just put 2011 a1286 keyboard and found this!

it says in the description middle 2009 2010 and 2011 but idk if mine is middle 2011 :o i didnt purchase it so i wouldn't know exactly when :(

i realize this thread is a bit old, but i will say that i bought a keyboard ONLY from dhgate for about $25 and $20 shipping for my 2008 unibody and installed it myself. i even added colored film to reduce the LUDICROUSLY TOO BRIGHT backlight and break the keys into groups (yellow for alpha, blue for numbers). it is totally doable and in-addition if just a couple keys aren't working that is usually from liquid intrusion and can be fixed on a key-by-key basis (did it on my computer after an entire glass of milk was dropped on my computer).

@Andrew - Hey, do you have an instruction for your repair? I have the same problem with my computer, liquid intrusion, couple of keys aren't working, everything else is fine and it would be great to work around replacing the whole upper case. What do you mean by "key-by-key" - did you split the keys and integrate them into the old keyboard?
