How to hear incoming callers
mute button does not work, nore can i hear callers on the line, is the problem linked,how do i fix this

possibly..it could be that your headphone jack is damaged and so it's tricking the phone into only having sound output via headphone and not earpiece. you could try inserting and taking out headphones pretty quickly a few times, or cleaning inside the jack with a cottonbud. see if the loudspeaker works (speakerphone) if the above measures haven't worked then you'll need to replace the headphone jack (mute/power/volume) iPhone 3GS Headphone Jack Replacement
