MBP boots with chime and black screen and then grey screen sometimes.

I have a mid 2009 MBP 13' that will boot with chime to a black screen and caps lock key will still light green. Occasionally it will boot to the grey screen with the logo and a loading bar that does not fill and goes away to have the swirling dots. It seems to be in an endless boot. The power adapter will sometimes light up correctly, and sometimes not.

I have tried to zap the pram, reset the smc, use my restore disc and also attempted single user mode to no avail. I have only stopped short of reseating the RAM

The black screen or grey screen seems to be indicative of the MBPs temperature, it runs extremely hot.

Any ideas that may help me fix or diagnose the problem? This occurred 4 months outside of my warranty so Apple is not being of much assistance.

Did you try backing up your data, re-partitioning your HD and re-installing your OS? I think your B-Tree is failing on your HD

Hi,

first of all, you should try to diagnose the board. I’ve had a 2010 that had similar issues, but I realized it wasn’t a hard drive. The computer has a missing capacitor on the logic board. If there is no issue with the board, try safe mode. If that also doesn't work, try a USB stick with Catalina Patcher (dosdude1.com/catalina) I got it to work with Catalina Patcher. That sometimes also works
