Used Techtool Deluxe - now won't boot

Frequent warnings came up that the "startup disk" was almost out of space and to clear off files to make room. I did this a number of times and still the warning. Used utilities to check the disk, verify, etc. which showed minor problems but it would not let me do a repair and wanted me to used the install disk ... which of course I can't find 4 years later. So, I used what looked like the next best thing.. TechTool Deluxe that came with my (expired) care plan. It found a few minor issues in the volume structure and said it would fix it. IT DID A JOB ON IT! NOW, it won't boot. After teh chime, the fan and the cycling of the HD It just drops a translucent screen down that says in several languages to reboot ... and it never does.

Hi! Do you have another Mac you can connect to this computer via Firewire, and then boot this computer in target mode? If you do that, this laptop's drive should then show up on the desktop of the other Mac, at which point you can back up your files, and try to clear off enough space that hopefully the computer will let you boot up with restore media and reinstall/repair the OS. After backing up your files in this fashion, you may want to just wipe the drive and start over, since it's probably pretty cluttered by now after years of use.

Yes I have a imac g5 desktop and will see if I can follow your advise if for no other reason to backup the files. But, I don't know what I can use for restore media to reinstall/repair.

There's really going to be no way around borrowing or buying the appropriate restore media. Here's a link to what iFixit has for sale:

G4 HD won't mount. Attached properly and started G4 using "t" and got the firewire symbol but not on the G5. Used utilities and could see the G4 HD description in the listing on the left but below it the HD was grayed-out. I attempted to mount and it would not. Then attempted to verify and/or repair got the the following:

Name : Macintosh HD

Type : Volume

Disk Identifier : disk3s3

Mount Point : Not mounted

File System : Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

Connection Bus : FireWire

Partition Type : Apple_HFS

Device Tree : IODeviceTree:/PCI0@0/PCIB@1E/FRWR@3/node@d93fffe6f4602/sbp-2@4020

Writable : Yes

Universal Unique Identifier : A30A453C-D11F-33C8-ACB7-20FE52C5193B

Capacity : 27.8 GB (29,871,565,824 Bytes)

Owners Enabled : No

Can Turn Owners Off : Yes

Can Be Formatted : Yes

Bootable : Yes

Supports Journaling : Yes

Journaled : No

S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported

Disk Number : 3

Partition Number : 3

------------------------------------------

Then I attempted to verify/repair:

Verify and Repair disk “Macintosh HD”

Checking HFS Plus volume.

Invalid B-tree node size_

Volume check failed.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

1 HFS volume checked

1 volume could not be repaired because of an error

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then I tired to just repair:

Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”

Checking HFS Plus volume.

Invalid B-tree node size_

The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

1 HFS volume checked

Volume needs repair

Now I don't what else to try.

My G5 is a 20" desktop 2.16GHZ 1GB/250/SD/1600 DUO updated to be running tiger 10.4.11 too. Found two install disks for it. Disc 1 is labeled "iMac OS X Install Disc 1 version 10.4.7 AHT version 3A111". The other is "Mac OS x Install Disc 2 version 1.0; 2Z691-5862-A". Can I use one of these on my G4 A1054 1.2 GHZ (also running 10.4.11) to see if I can repair the defective volume noted above.
