What can I do if c6442 on logic board is burned?

Some time ago my MacBook Pro won’t turn on. After few tries it finally turned on, there was a turning on sound, but after that it turned off and from left side whole came smoke. When I tried to turn it on again, it started and worked normally, but I saw, that there is a burned hole under left shift key.

I took it to the support and they told me that repair is not worth. I opened it by myself at home and I saw, that on logic board are missing two c6442 parts and there is a hole in the keyboard back panel.

Is it worth to repair it or can it be a dangerous in normal use? From what reason could it happened?

Sorry if my English is not good.

if you want to price a replacement logic board check for the numbers used by Apple 820-4924-A, 661-02355.

Kuba Rola a replacement board for this will cost you around $300 USD whereas the two capacitors are somewhere around $10 USD If you can solder it yourself you have the cost for the logic board repair. As for the traces damaged etc, we will need a close up picture of the damaged area. You can always connect the capacitors via jumpers if the solder pads/traces are to badly damaged.

By not replacing it you will no longer have audio output since the components are part of the audio amplifier circuitry. The other issue is that you have definitely lost the left shift key. Repairing this will be impossible so you are most likely looking at a new keyboard.

As for “Is it worth to repair it” that will depend on your skills, or connection with somebody that can do the repair, as well as economical situation. Only you can answer this. Personally, I would at least try to fix it to safe my hard earned money.

The capacitors you need are

1)C6442 tantalum capacitor 100UF 6.3V 20%

2) C6412 capacitor 0.1uF 16V 10% in a 0201 package

Thank you for the names of capacitors. My dad likes stuff like that so I will try to fix it with him.

@oldturkey03 are you sure that it's a 1000uF capacitor?

by

Kuba Rola one to many zeros. It is a 100uF capacitor. Good catch and edits have been made

mmm … Not sure if your logic board is repairable here. The two caps at the location not only self destructed they also damaged the traces which the caps connect to as well as pass under.

Without deeper probing the board to check out the traces fully and the amount of work to patch the board I would recommend just replacing it MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Early 2015) 2.7 GHz Logic Board.

Here’s a better view of a good board

As to what caused the failure, the circuit area that was effected was part of the audio logic. Did you plug in a set of powered speakers? Was the outlet used shared with the systems charger? Are you using a surge suppressor or UPS?

I've never connected it to external speakers, only to headphones. I've connected the piano to it via the usb port. I've never connected it to a UPS or a surge suppressor. It didn't happen during charging. I don't currently have the money to replace the whole logic board. Can I use this logic board until I buy a new one? Won't the problem transfer to the other components of the logic board?

I can't tell you if the damage caused will have a lingering issue. If might and then again it might not! Whats important is making sure the damaged area is cleaned up so nothing left could short out and we don't know if the damage transferred to the other side.

You still have the keyboard to deal with as well.

I would strongly recommend getting a good surge suppressor to protect your system any anything you plug in to it.

@danj There is no any mark on the other side of the motherboard.

Thats good to hear!

The board may be repairable, but I wouldn’t invest a lot of time into it just in case the damage is too severe to repair - it isn’t grossly bad to the point of being beyond repair, but the damage is borderline and may be beyond your skillset to repair.

Find a schematic for the board and see what was there and try replacing it, providing nothing else is also bad. If there are other issues, reassess the damage and make a final judgement call. If you can save the board and keep your SN intact (as in board matches the bottom) that is preferable to changing it and potentially making the system harder to sell - a lot of people do not like to buy mismatched systems including myself to a point. I don’t care on 10+ year old hardware since it's probably off anyway, don't like it on current models like the 2011 Macs and don't buy mismatched systems that have years of official support left without exception unless the matching cover is part of the sale.
