MacBook Pro with question mark folder but disk doesn't appear on OS in

Hi,

My macbook pro starts with the question mark folder. I then used the disk utility (after getting Internet Recovery sign) to repair the disk and it seems okay but when I try to install the OS it doesn't detect any disk and only the Mountain Lion OS option that appears while my mac OS was updated last year. I read somewhere that it may be the cable or the disk is faulty. I am just confused because I can see the disk in the disk utility but can't see it on the OS installation and start up disk. Should I bring my laptop to apple center or can I fix it myself? Because to be honest I'm kind of broke now :(

Thank you in advance for your help!

Linda

Apple did a switch-a-roo on you! The older OS-X & macOS Sierra and older use GUID/HFS+ (also known as the journaled file system) High Sierra and newer uses GUID/APFS!

So what can happen is the recovery partition OS still has the older boot image and access to the older Disk Utility which can’t handle the newer APFS structure, which is what happening here.

So now we have problem! How do we install the newer OS when your system recovery partition or Internet recovery only gets you to Mountain Lion! This gets into the keys you press to enter into the Internet Recovery. Here we need to use the startup keys Command (⌘) and R. This will re-install the same version you had before. Give that a try!
