Replaced lightening port - now no one can understand what I say

(iPhone 7). Had lightening port replaced because charging was intermittent. My microphones for outgoing calls and for speaker use were working fine until I had the port replaced. Now, no one can hear me clearly through either speaker or simply handheld-to-ear call. No problems using Bluetooth ear pieces. I took it back to the repair shop. They replaced the port again. Problem persists. They’re telling me it’s the motherboard. How can one know if it’s the motherboard, damage to the microphones during port replacement, or what? Do I just need to give up and get a new phone?

You certainly want to eliminate a faulty replacement Lightning port (which the shop appears to have done). The motherboard issue they are referring to is the Audio IC issue on the iPhone 7, you can read my answer to this question (Replaced my screen, sound not working or vibrate, headphones work tho), just a few minutes ago, for more details.

However, the Audio IC issue usually has the complete failure of one or more audio devices, i.e. a microphone, speaker, ear speaker, headphone etc. If your microphone kinda works but has poor quality sound, then I would suspect a modular component failure, in this case the Lightning Port (they may have a bad batch).

Minho is right. You need to rule out the lightning port. I would be hesitant to take it back to that repair shop though. I have known lazy repair shops only taking out the bottom half of screws and flexing the logic board up to install the port. If this was the case they most likely damaged one of the traces along the flex line below the audio IC.

Thanks, Minho. The first time I tried to get the port fixed, the first part they used was defective. Then I got it with a second replacement, but didn't realize initially that there was a problem w hearing/understanding my calls.

I took it back again. Once more, they said the first part they started re-replacing it with was defective. Now I have it back with a different part, and the sound problem is no better. They say it is definitely the motherboard.

My husband is very, very tech-savvy, and had considered ordering the part himself and doing the 60+ step replacement, but had decided to let the "professionals" do it. They will not replace it a third time.

So now I'm out almost $100, and still have a messed up phone. I am not one of those people comfortable walking around with an earpiece in all the time. Is it time for a new phone?

Hmmm...$100 sounds mightily expensive for a charge port replacement. I wish I could charge that much ;>).

At this point, I would try another shop. At the very least, they could just be suffering from a bad batch of parts.

Please clarify if the sound is working somewhat, as in muffled or noisy/grainy or is there no sound at all.

by

The sound is working somewhat, but it's very muffled and indistinct, low volume, to the person listening, whether I am using the microphone of the speaker.

by

Unless something went wrong during the repair, I suspect a bad charge port flex.

I just spent all night trouble shooting, there was plastic covering on the speakers when you order the charging port. Who ever installed the charging port didn’t take off the plastic covering, I installed the port myself and Siri worked, front and back camera worked but recording audio and talking on the phone didn’t work. I finally tapped on the speaker, I could hear the tap, so I knew it worked. I took it apart and removed the plastic covering. Now it works perfect. I have seen a lot of posts about this problem with no solutions.
