Questions About Broken U2 Special Edition 20gb iPod

I have a U2 Special Edition 20gb iPod that has been broken since about 2009. I would like to try to fix it. It shows the sad face icon when I try to turn it on. When it is charging with an off brand cable, it will show a charging battery icon and then switch back to the sad face. However, when I charge it with a Fire Wire cable, it will cycle between the Apple logo, the sad face icon, and then show a battery icon with an exclamation point (like the one in the sad face icon), then back to the Apple logo to restart the cycle.

I would like to update the hard drive 128 ssd, but before I do, is there anything that I should try first to see if I can make it work.

Thanks,

Scott Eaton

@sneatonscott yes. start with a new battery. There is also the possibility that your hard drive is all gummed up. Get an inexpensive USB-to -Zif cable (something that will fit your drive most come with multiple adapters) that you can use to connect the HDD to your computer. Check the drive out. Since you are going to replace it, it won’t matter what it shows but it will matter to rule it out/in as a cause for the iPods current issues.
