ZL and R Buttons not working.

The R button does not work at all when pressed. It can be pressed but I noticed it doesn’t move as far as the L button. The ZL button, when pressed, causes the system to shut off for some reason. I bought this used off of eBay and it doesn't have a warranty so I’m trying to avoid paying $50+ to get it fixed. My best idea is to check the connections and make sure they’re correct and solid. I can’t imagine how the ZL button got that messed up, I just hope it can be fixed.

The cause of this is probably faulty wires.

I would recommend:

Opening it up and fixing it yourself. I’m guessing there’s a faulty connection near the top left hinge, maybe a power cord or ribbon strip that isn’t connecting fully. or,

Take it to an electronics repair store. You'll get the same system back, but fixing a broken system may not fully stop/prevent issues as much as a Nintendo replacement would. or,

Try cleaning the R and ZL buttons, something like Falcon electronics duster cleaner would work for this type of situation.

If none of these work then your system might have a defective motherboard, the only ways to fix this would be to send your system to Nintendo for repair or check it with an ohmmeter.

Sounds like there's something obstructing your R button, so a cleaning should fix that. ZL, on the other hand, won't be so easy. Someone probably tried to open the friction fit connector near the circle pad and broke it, (DON'T try to do that) so now ZL bumps the cable and causes a short. If it still has some clamping power, I've heard you can wedge something like paper in there to hold the cable down, otherwise the connector probably has to be replaced
