Laptop will no longer turn on while plugged in.

I recently found my old HP Pavilion DV7-6b55dx that I had misplaced. I proceeded to plug it in and turn it on.

While it was starting up, I noticed that half of the keyboard was pulled all the way up. I remembered that I had previously been working on the keyboard.

Well I made the mistake of taking the keyboard off while the computer was still plugged in and turned on. I began reconnecting internal components of the keyboard, and while doing so, the computer shut down completely and now will no longer turn on at all. The light by the charge port is lit, indicating it's receiving power, but it won't turn on at all.

My guess is that I short-circuited something via static electricity from my hands. Is there anyway I can troubleshoot this? And if perhaps something needs to be replaced oh, any suggestions on what it might be?

Thanks for the response, but that was the first thing I tried. Any other suggestions?

Hi Allen.

Not really. You may well have shorted something.

I guess you have learnt a good lesson, the hard way.

Disconnect power and take out battery, if possible before doing anything on any electronics.

Good luck,

Mike

Most likely it was not static electricity that took it out, on much more nicely built equipment and high end equipment, the connectors have certain contacts longer than the others to insure that the ground connectors are contacted before the power and the other misc pins are connected due to problems just like yours and lessons learned by these companies due to experience.

The best way to troubleshoot is to isolate the problem component based on what happens when you try to use the system. If the computer won’t turn on at all, then it’s probably not receiving electricity. Since the light by the charge port is lit, then your charging cord is working. That may leave the battery as the culprit.
